The Social Security Administration’s Listing of Impairments describes medical conditions that are considered severe enough to prevent a person from working. These conditions are found in Appendix 1 of the Social Security Disability regulations and are grouped by body system. If your condition or a combination of conditions meets or equals one of the listed impairments, you may be considered disabled regardless of your age, education, or work history.
To qualify, you must provide medical evidence that shows your condition meets all the specific criteria in the listing. The SSA may consult a medical expert to review your case. Common examples include Listing 1.15 for back and neck disorders and Listing 12.04 for depression, bipolar disorder, and other mental health conditions. If the SSA determines your condition does not meet a listing, it must explain why.
