What this listing is about
Severely narrowed peripheral vision in the better eye can meet the listing under any one of three alternative measurements (angular diameter, Mean Deviation, or field-efficiency percentage). eCFR
Exact text (SSA)
“2.03 Contraction of the visual field in the better eye, with:
A. The widest diameter subtending an angle around the point of fixation no greater than 20 degrees. OR
B. An MD of 22 decibels or greater, determined by automated static threshold perimetry that measures the central 30 degrees of the visual field (see 2.00A6d). OR
C. A visual field efficiency of 20 percent or less, determined by kinetic perimetry (see 2.00A7c).” eCFR
Checklist
- Test in better eye.
- Show one of the following:
- Widest diameter ≤ 20°, or
- MD ≥ 22 dB on acceptable automated perimetry of the central 24–30°, or
- Field efficiency ≤ 20% on kinetic perimetry. eCFR Social Security
Proof tips & testing
- Automated static threshold perimetry (e.g., HFA 30-2, 24-2; Octopus 32) is preferred for MD; ensure ANSI-conforming device and quality indices.
- For kinetic testing (e.g., Goldmann), include charts and meridian sums to calculate efficiency.
- Explain reliability indices (fixation losses, false positives/negatives).
- Include etiology (e.g., glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa) and longitudinal evidence. Social Security
Definitions: MD (Mean Deviation) = global index on perimetry; visual field efficiency = percent of remaining useful field by kinetic mapping.
