Disabled veterans are due to receive the most significant VA compensation rate increase in over 30 years. The 2023 VA disability pay rates include a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase of 8.7% to match the Social Security benefit rate increase.
VA disability compensation is a benefit payment for veterans who suffered injury or illness while serving in the military or whose service caused an existing condition to worsen. Veterans’ compensation benefits are tax-free at both the federal and state levels.
VA bases its 2023 VA disability pay rates on your disability rating and your family situation regarding dependents (specifically, is the veteran alone, or does the veteran have a dependent spouse, children, and parents).
When Will the Increases Take Effect?
New disability compensation rates will be effective December 1, 2022, and veterans will receive their increased monthly payments starting January 1, 2023.
As a frame of reference, the VA compensation rates over the past five years were raised as follows:

Can I Increase My VA Disability Rating in 2023?
The VA assigns your disability rating based on the severity of your service-connected disabilities. Over time, you may feel that your condition has gotten worse or your initially-approved disability benefits are no longer sufficient. In such cases, it may be time to update the VA with current medical evidence that correctly represents your present or worsening disabilities.
It is also essential to know that veteran’s disability benefits are not permanent and are subject to review. For example, the VA may reexamine your claim to assess whether your disabling condition has improved, stayed the same, or deteriorated further.
Our attorneys support veterans and their families in their ongoing fight for fair and accurate disability ratings and access to benefits. We can help you review your VA combined disability rating and your individual disability ratings. Depending on your situation, you may be able to file a claim for a new or secondary condition, or file for increased disability compensation.
