I’m always getting Social Security questions from potential clients about whether or not their problem is considered an official disability. This is very important to know, because lots of people suffer from problems that aren’t in the most up-to-date listings, but that alone doesn’t mean that you can’t get benefits.
So, how do you know?
One place everyone should check is the Social Security Rulings (SSRs) section on www.socialsecurity.gov. Why? Because quite often the SSA will post rulings describing conditions that aren’t yet listed as official disabilities. In one of the most recent updates, they added rulings for:
- SSR 99-2: CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME
- SSR 93-2P: HUMAN IMMUNODEFICIENCY VIRUS (HIV)
- SSR 02-2P: INTERSTITIAL CYSTITIS
- SSR 02-1P: OBESITY
- SSR 03-1P: POST POLIO SEQUELAE
- SSR 03-2P: REFLEX SYMPATHETIC DYSTROPHY SYNDROME/COMPLEX REGIONAL PAIN SYNDROME
- SSR 06-1P: TREMULITE ASBESTOS-RELATED IMPAIRMENTS
- SSR 82-57: LOSS OF SPEECH

SSRs Help Establish Disability
SSRs (Social Security rulings) are incredibly useful to me as a Social Security Disability lawyer because when I have clients suffering from similar ailments, I can use the rulings as guidelines on how to establish disability. Basically, they tell me what kind of evidence I need and how to argue in hearings in order to get my clients the benefits they deserve.
One of the biggest benefits of using a Social Security disability attorney to help with your claim or appeal is that we strive to stay up-to-date on all the latest listings and SSRs so we can give you the best chance at success.
