One of the big changes from DSM-IV to DSM-5, in regards to Long Term Disability Benefits, is that a number of somatoform disorders from the older Diagnostic and Statistical Manual have been given new titles and descriptions in the current manual. There are several reasons that this was done.
First and foremost, there was a desire to make the disorders reflect the reality of what practitioners were witnessing in actual patients. In some cases, this meant redefining disorders to group what had previously been several individual disorders together because they almost always presented concurrently and were in actuality believed to be symptoms of the same issue. Second, experts hoped to make the manual itself easier to understand and better explain individual disorders with names and definitions that would be more accessible. And finally, they hoped to remove some of the pejorative stigma attached to certain conditions.
