Tricks Unum Will Use To Deny Your Claim
Unum will make the whole process as daunting as possible. Here’s a few of the tricks Unum will try to use to deny your claim:
- Disregarding Your Doctor’s Medical Statements: In many cases, it appears that your doctor’s statements, which specifically state that you can no longer work, are irrelevant in making their decision. In others, Unum’s medical examiner will often try to interpret your medical records for the company’s benefit, resulting in a denial or only partial payment of the disability benefits you are entitled to.
- Your Physical Disability is Actually a Psychological Disability: It is a medical fact that physical disabilities–from heart disease to fibromyalgia–can also cause depression, anxiety and other psychological impairments. Many Unum Long Term Disability policies have a two-year limitation on coverage of mental or nervous conditions. We’ve encountered many cases in which Unum will try to transform a claim for a physical condition into a claim for a psychological impairment. By dragging out the claims process with this and other delaying tactics, Unum will find ways to sideline the primary diagnosis so they only have to pay a limited claim for a mental or nervous disability.
- Don’t Call Us, We’ll Call You: In many instances, Unum makes it as difficult as possible to navigate their chain of command in order to speak with a supervisor. Unfortunately, many policyholders become discouraged with Unum’s stonewalling and give up on their claim — even though they need and deserve the benefits promised to them by the insurance company.
- Never Enough Information: Unum will often repeatedly (and unnecessarily) require you to provide additional supporting evidence of your disability. They may make a demand that you be evaluated by their doctor, which is probably uncalled for. At first these seem to appear to be reasonable requests, but the fact is often these requests are well-planned tactics to delay the process as well as “find” evidence that they can use against you.
