The most common disability claim filed with Veterans Affairs is tinnitus, which refers to ringing, buzzing, or other sounds in the ears or head. But with nearly 5.2 million veterans receiving VA compensation and over 600,000 pending claims, tinnitus is far from the only disability the VA commonly encounters. Moreover, veterans who can no longer work due to a disabling condition deserve a strong advocate. Tinnitus
The VA reports that 2.3 million veterans receive compensation for tinnitus, with another 1.3 million receiving compensation for general hearing loss. Military service members are often exposed to loud noises, which is one of the primary risk factors for the development of it. Patients experience noises without external stimuli, often in the form of a ringing or buzzing.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Some servicemembers, primarily those who see combat, may be exposed to traumatic experiences that can cause PTSD. It is a mental health disorder triggered by a terrifying event. Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, and severe anxiety and other issues. According to the VA, about 15% of all Vietnam veterans and 10-20% of all veterans of the Gulf War or the wars in Iraq or Afghanistan suffer from it.

Traumatic Brain Injury
With the widespread use of improvised explosive devices in Iraq, Afghanistan, and throughout the Middle East, over 400,000 service members suffered from a traumatic brain injury, or TBI–between 2000-2019. In addition, TBI symptoms often overlap with symptoms associated with PTSD, such as headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light, and changes in cognition.

Migraines
Between 2000 and 2007, the Department of Defense reported that migraine diagnoses rose by 27%. They can be caused by various factors commonly experienced in the armed forces, such as the inhalation of chemicals or a head injury. Like other brain and head conditions, many migraine symptoms overlap with those of a TBI, concussion, and PTSD.
Sciatica
The sciatic (or ischiatic) nerve, which runs from the hip through the leg, is the longest in the human body. Nerve damage, a compressed nerve, or a spinal injury can lead to sciatica or the paralysis of the sciatic nerve, which often causes debilitating pain. According to research by the National Institutes of Health, veterans are significantly more likely to develop sciatica than the general population.
