About American United Life Insurance Co.
AUL is one of several companies under the umbrella group, OneAmerica Financial Partners, Inc. OneAmerica is a powerhouse in the insurance and financial services marketplace.
American United Life Insurance is a mutual insurance company, meaning there are no stockholders. It is owned entirely by policyholders.
The general thinking is, mutual insurance companies work to ensure that their policyholders’ benefits are maximized for the long term — more so than a publicly traded insurance company might.
When disability strikes and you must file a claim, getting those benefits should be a safe bet.
But AUL doesn’t always award disability benefits when it should. The company has been involved in numerous lawsuits for the unreasonable denial, underpayment or termination of long-term disability benefits.

American United Life Disability Claim Handling is Sub-contracted to a Third Party
When it comes to your claim for disability benefits, American United Life Insurance does not itself handle or process the claim.
AUL generally contracts the claims administration process to a company called Disability Reinsurance Management Services, Inc. (Disability RMS).
Check your AUL claim form. Most likely it refers to Disability RMS in the Claim Filing Instructions, as well as the Authorization for Release of Information. As administrator, Disability RMS will likely have a major role in evaluating your claim and deciding whether to award or deny LTD benefits.
In disputed claim denials, depending on the facts of each case, both American United Life Insurance Co. and Disability Reinsurance Management Services, Inc. may be held accountable in legal actions.
What Type Of American United Life Disability Policy Do You Have?
AUL issues and underwrites the following types of disability insurance plans:
- Group Short Term and Long Term Disability Insurance – paid by your employer
- Individual Disability Income Insurance – you purchased a policy directly from American United
- Voluntary Group Disability Insurance – paid by employees through payroll deduction
- Cost-Shared Group Disability Coverage – group disability plan (CorePLUS) offered to businesses who employ 50 or more workers as a cost-shared coverage
- Optional disability insurance riders may be available
