Cancer Claims Caused by Roundup Herbicide
In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer noted that glyphosate—the active ingredient in Roundup weed killer—is probably carcinogenic to humans. Since then, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against manufacturer Monsanto.
Cancers are complex—often with mysterious root causes. However, environmental risk factors likely play a role. Several types of rare cancer may be linked to prolonged or repeated Roundup weed killer exposure:
- A 2019 study found that excess exposure to glyphosate resulted in a 41 percent greater chance of contracting Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL).
- Some lawsuits allege they have been diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) after Roundup use.
- Another study identified a possible connection between glyphosate and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

What Is Glyphosate?
Glyphosate has been used to kill weeds in the U.S. since 1974. As a broad-spectrum herbicide, it inhibits a plant enzyme that synthesizes the amino acids phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan. Though the EPA has not deemed glyphosate carcinogenic, and it’s still being sold commercially in the US, Bayer has agreed to stop selling it for residential use in 2023 due to the overwhelming number of lawsuits. It’s already prohibited in the Netherlands, Vietnam, and Germany.
Roundup Settlements
A number of Roundup cancer claims have settled successfully in the plaintiffs’ favor so far, including:
- DeWayne Johnson: $20.5 million
A school groundskeeper in San Francisco Bay recalled an incident when a canister of weed killer accidentally broke, covering him in glyphosate from head to toe. He contacted Monsanto after developing a severe rash. Shortly after that, he was diagnosed with NHL. Though his initial $289 million jury award was reduced upon appeal, the victory paved the way for similar settlements.
- Edward Hardeman: $80 million
The plaintiff was diagnosed with NHL after years of using Roundup across his three properties in California. He said he would have never used the product if it had been labeled as a known or potential carcinogen. Though Monsanto appealed the verdict, the court upheld the decision.
- Alva and Alberta Pilliod: $86.7 million
In the third bellwether trial, a husband and wife had used Roundup on their property for over 30 years before he was diagnosed with NHL cancer in 2011. She was diagnosed in 2015. They won a combined $55 million in damages, plus $1 billion each in punitive damages. While a judge reduced the total award to $86.7 million, the manufacturer lost its appeal.
As of October 2022, Monsanto had settled nearly 100,000 Roundup lawsuits worth approximately $11 billion. In addition, parent company Bayer has negotiated block settlement arrangements with lawyers handling large numbers of cases. However, there are still some 30,000 cases pending in state courts, with new cases filed almost every day.
