How to pick the right representative is one of the most important Social Security questions for people filing a disability claim. You want a Social Security disability attorney with experience and a track record of success. You want someone willing to dedicate themselves to doing what it takes to win your claim instead of just going through the motions.
But how can you tell that someone is right for you? One great test is to see how organized and prepared they are. Because each case can involve so many different facts and piece of information, I like to create a hearing preparation checklist so that I know I’m not missing something important.
What’s a Hearing Preparation Checklist?
When you head out to the grocery store, you make a list so that you don’t forget anything, right? Well, lots of professionals do the same thing, including realtors, surgeons, and pilots. A good checklist can help ensure that he or she has a mastery over your case and is as prepared as possible before heading in to your hearing.
Specifically, it allows me to:
- Stay organized and consistent
- Highlight important facts
- Develop a legal theory
- Recognize potential issues and figure out how to deal with them
- Figure out what evidence I’m going to need to win
- Prepare my client to testify

The Value of a Hearing Preparation Checklist
Every Social Security disability attorney is different but for me, hearing checklists always contain certain specific points. I write down all of the information I know about my client, including when they were born, their education, when the condition started, why they stopped working, and so on. Reports from doctors and outside agencies and individuals are also added and a pose questions about their validity. I determine whether or not I need certain records and remind myself to order them. I write questions to ask my clients so that I can prepare them for the hearing.
Essentially, the checklist is a place where everything that’s important about your case can live and be easily found, and it’s a reminder to your representative about what they need to do to win. It also answers one of the most important Social Security questions: what’s the best way to organize information for a case?
